Employee Spotlight: Jeff Churchill, Senior Software Engineer

At Cloud Construct, we are a talented and fun-loving group. Though we all work remotely from our homes each day, we still maintain a high level of camaraderie through daily conversations, virtual happy hours, and work together days (when safe to do so).

In this installment of our Employee Spotlight Series, meet senior software developer, Jeff Churchill. Jeff talked to us about his love of technology in both his professional and personal life, and his work at Cloud since starting in March 2017.

Get to know Jeff!

Cloud Construct: Before working at Cloud Construct, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Jeff Churchill: Before Cloud Construct I worked at my father's machine shop as a machine operator. I also spent a few years as a Geek Squad agent.

CC: What did you want to be when growing up?

JC: I would just say “a scientist.”

CC: What is your role at Cloud Construct?

JC: I am a senior software engineer.

CC: Which one would you want most – flying cars, robot housekeepers, or moon cities?

JC: Moon cities

CC: How has Cloud Construct helped you in your career development?

JC: I've been given the opportunity to learn many new technologies.

CC: What do you like most about Cloud Construct?

JC: That we are completely remote.

CC: What is the first concert you attended?

JC: They Might Be Giants

CC: What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?

JC: A Tesla Roadster

CC: What is the one thing, you can’t live without?

JC: A good internet connection!

CC: What book did you read last?

JC: Recursion by Blake Crouch

CC: If you could pick one theme for Cloud Construct to turn into a book about the company, what would it be?

JC: Problem Solving is a common theme with the company.

CC: What is the best book you have ever read?

JC: Most recent favorite was We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor.

CC: Do you have a favorite quote?

JC: "The source of man's unhappiness is his ignorance of Nature. The pertinacity with which he clings to blind opinions imbibed in his infancy, which interweave themselves with his existence, the consequent prejudice that warps his mind, that prevents its expansion, that renders him the slave of fiction, appears to doom him to continual error." – Baron d'Holbach

CC: If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

JC: Soylent would be fine with me!

CC: What has been the most important innovation you have witnessed in your lifetime?

JC: I believe Deep Learning is the most significant. We'll be seeing the effects of this for a long time.

CC: What is an ability you wish you had?

JC: Perfect recall

CC: If you were an animal what would you be?

JC: A capybara

CC: What is your proudest moment at Cloud Construct?

JC: Receiving a promotion.

CC: If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?

JC: Food, sunblock, and a satellite phone

CC: What do you like to do on your days off?

JC: VR and DIY home automation stuff

CC: What phobias do you have?

JC: I do not like heights.

CC: What TV show/movie are you ashamed to admit you love?

JC: Not a show or a movie, but Fortnite is actually pretty fun.

CC: Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?

JC: I've visited the Pacific Northwest several times. It's a beautiful place with friendly people.  

CC: Where is your favorite place to eat?

JC: Chipotle

CC: Which Marvel Hero would you be and why?

JC: Captain America — naively optimistic
