The digital version, known as GBG Tech, had to follow the well-established, proven methods and guidelines of the long standing non-digital approach in order to be successful in the classroom. Cloud Construct’s Experience Design team analyzed and transformed these interactions and rule-based requirements, applying client-provided user interface concepts, into a cohesive application design for the entire GBG Tech platform. By understanding the end users — both teachers and students — as well as the USM Research Team goals for program adherence, we worked together to create a clinically sound implementation of GBG for digital devices. Funding for the program is provided by the Institute of Education Services (IES) — the statistics, research, and evaluation arm of the U.S. Department of Education.
Cloud Construct was able to create an experience that enables teachers to effectively and independently run the game in their classrooms — while at the same time encouraging student participation by utilizing student-only views, displayed and projected in real-time on a variety of classroom media device types.
Standardized learning and socialization — made digital, fun and meaningful

Behind the scenes data capture and analysis
Ultimately, researchers will focus on the data generated by the repeated use of the system, as the in-classroom experience continues to evolve. In classroom use, key screens of the GBG Tech platform must be broadcast on standard classroom equipment for student viewing, while staying in real-time sync with private, teacher-only facing views of information and game play status. Cloud Construct worked closely with the USM Research Team in creating the entire UI for the platform, inclusive of specific views and permissions for the three user groups: Researchers, Teachers, Students. Additionally, we created the overall branding for GBG Tech itself, including logos, color palettes, typography, mascot characters, behavior rewards and animations.
A technical architecture engineered to its simplest form for maximum performance
Performant code and intelligent technical architecture are the underpinnings of the GBG Tech platform. This was paramount as GBG Tech needed to reflect the fast-moving, fun and engaging nature of classroom gameplay — while also positioning the software credibly amongst education focused, peer technology solutions. Given the nature of a constantly updating UI layer, we opted for tech that would be as quick and responsive as possible across the platform. After logging into the site, a user’s navigations are tracked. Whenever they navigate to a new page, an event is sent to all other browser windows that are logged in as that same user for the session. If any of those browser windows are sitting on a “Student” defined page, those windows will acknowledge the navigation event and attempt to find a student page that is the analog to where the main page is attempting to navigate to. If an appropriate student page is found, it is navigated to, and if not, the student scoreboard page is the fallback. This all culminates into a well-developed, high-performing system, which will help GBG Tech evolve and scale well beyond its initial implementation to future, planned iterations of the platform.
